Group 1 winning sprinter Barakey has completed several impressive pieces of work in recent weeks and appears on track for a second-up appearance in the Group 3 Roma Cup (1200m) at Belmont on May 16th.
Posting thirteen wins and one close second place finish through his 16 career starts so far, Barakey resumed during the 2014 spring for an impressive win in the Listed Goodwood Sprint (1300m) on August 23rd; progressing to second behind subsequent Group 1 champion Elite Belle in the Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes (1200m) before a string of minor ailments forced a return to the paddock.
Thrilled with the form and class displayed by the seven-year-old in work between races at Ascot over the weekend, trainer Jim Taylor confirmed Sunday’s Listed Northam Stakes (1100m) at Belmont looks likely to figure as his first point of call ahead of the 2015 Roma Cup.
“He’ll be pretty close to full fitness and looks well weighted at 57.5kgs because he’d be carrying a lot more if it was a handicap,” Taylor told Racenet.
“It’s a possibility (2015 Roma Cup) but we’ll take each run at a time; if he pulls up well we might go to the Belmont Sprint (Group 3, 1400m, May 30th).
Stamping his claims as one of the country’s leading short course specialists when debuting to racing in 2011 for six consecutive race wins, Barakey continued his unbeaten run upon resuming in 2012; taking out the Facebook.com/PerthRacing BM80 (1100m) before making a successful transition to black type racing in winning the Northam Stakes.
Returning in spring in similarly devastating form, the Key Business gelding won the Festival Club Sprint (1000m) and Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) before breaking through for a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) in late November.
Unable to make an impact when beating only two runners home in his east coast debut in the 2013 edition of the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m), Barakey returned west for success in the Prince Of Wales Stakes before another failed attempt at the highest level in the Winterbottom Stakes.
Nominations for the 2015 Roma Cup are due by Monday, May 11th while a final field and barrier draw is set to be completed and released by midday, May 13th.
