While the excitement of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival continues at Doomben Racecourse this Saturday, Western Australia is also set to host a terrific day’s racing at Belmont Park.
Grand Nirvana is attempting to win the H G Bolton Sprint – Roma Cup double for the second consecutive year
The headline event at the meeting will be the $125,000 Group 3 D’Orsogna Roma Cup (1200m), which has attracted 17 nominations including last year’s winner, the Fred Kersley-trained Grand Nirvana seeking back to back success.
The talented four-year-old Scenic gelding took out the H G Bolton Sprint (1200m) at the Belmont track last start, the same race he won in the lead up to his Roma Cup victory last year.
The horse that ran second to Grand Nirvana in the H G Bolton, seven-year-old Idyllic Prince, is also backing up in the Roma Cup on Saturday. Another gelding from boom sire Scenic, Idyllic Prince did sensationally to run a gallant second first-up in the H G Bolton, picking up where he left off in November last year when runner-up to Ortensia in the Group 2 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m).
Sure to improve second-up, Idyllic Prince will be one of the favourites for Saturday. Trainer Jim Taylor also has one of Idyllic Prince’s stablemates nominated for the Roma Cup, consistent five-year-old Vain Raider.
H G Bolton third and fourth placegetters Roman Time and Black In Time are also nominated for Saturday.
Other top nominees for the 2010 Roma Cup include last year’s Group 1 WATC Derby (2400m) third placegetter Phenomenons having their first start back from a spell; six-year-old O’Reilly gelding Escadaire trained by Frank Maynard who won the Listed Miss Andretti Stakes (1200m) at Ascot three starts back; and another from Maynard’s stables Kid Choisir, the only three-year-old nominated for the Roma Cup this year.
The final field of acceptances for the 2010 D’Orsogna Roma Cup will be announced later in the week and published here. In the meantime check out the odds for the Belmont races as well as those conducted at Doomben this weekend, including the $650,000 Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) at Ladbrokes.com.au.
