Worth $125,000, the Roma Cup is most often contested by horses that have come via the earlier Perth Racing Carnival event in the weeks prior to the Cup. A good lead-up event to the Roma Cup is the $150,000 Group 3 Hyperion Stakes (1400m) at Ascot in March, or the Roma Cup can serve as a suitable back up race for horses that previously ran in higher status events such as the $500,000 Group 2 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) the previous November.

One final Group race takes place in Belmont each year following the Roma Cup, the $125,000 Group 3 Belmont Sprint (1400m), and many of the same horses will run in both events.

And looking back down south, at the famous Flemington racecourse is the famous Melbourne Cup – which is the largest horse race in Australia!

Roma Cup History

The Roma Cup was first run in 1966 when Summer Storm claimed victory. It began as a Principal race run over 10 furlongs. The distance changed to eight and then seven furlongs until the metric conversion saw the race length change to 1400m in 1973. For one year in 1974, when Clear Mak claimed their second successive Roma Cup win, the distance was increased to 1600m.

In 1980 the Roma Cup was elevated to a Group 3 status event and the length was changed to its current distance of 1200m.
